FAVORITE CHICAGO MUSEUMS

July 3, 2017

We used to live in Chicago and loved to take advantage of all of the amazing art, culture and events in the city so I decided to put together a list of our favorite museums!

  • Art Institute of Chicago: An unrivaled museum that has amazing collections and exhibits from the 17th century to the present. Also, the gardens on the north and south wings of the museum are beautiful and well worth the visit especially in the spring and summer.

  • The Driehaus Museum: An old mansion located in River North that opened as a museum in 2003. They have unique rotating exhibits, which have included everything from the costumes used in Downton Abbey to Cartoonists of the Gilded Age.

  • Field Museum of Natural History: This museum has a continuous rotation of interesting artifacts and relics. My favorite things that are always there are Sue the T-rex, the Pawnee Earth Lodge and the Egyptian mummies.

  • Museum of Science and Industry: Located by the University of Chicago and built for the 1893 Columbian Exposition, this museum houses a very interactive experience that is great for kids.

  • Adler Planetarium: You can catch a show about the planets or the entire solar system, but we highly recommend attending Adler After Dark where they have bar and you have full access to all of the exhibits. Also, this museum has one of the greatest views of the Chicago skyline.

  • Museum of Contemporary Art: Located in the heart of downtown, just off of Michigan Avenue, this museum has some great exhibits come through, but we really loved following their events calendar when we lived in the city. We saw a phenomenal David Bowie tribute show here once.

  • DePaul Art Museum: A small building north of the city that is run by DePaul University that showcases some great art. I even saw a handful of Andy Warhols here! Check their schedule before you go to see if they have something you might enjoy.

  • Shedd Aquarium: A wonderful aquarium to show the kids, but if you are looking for a fun date night during the summer, buy tickets to Jazzin' at the Shedd!
